Bij een te lage dosis doet een geneesmiddel ‘niets’. Vanaf een bepaalde dosis neemt het effect toe tot een maximum wordt bereikt. Ga je hoger, dan ontstaat louter giftigheid. Deze farmacologische vlieger gaat op voor de meeste geneesmiddelen. Maar op homeopathie is een ander principe van toepassing.

Een homeopathisch middel is dermate verdund dat er geen enkel molecuul van de werkzame stof meer in zit. Dus is het hooguit een placebo, aldus criticasters. Homeopathie is gebaseerd op het fenomeen van ‘hormesis’. Letterlijk betekent dit Griekse woord: prikkeling.
Veel omgevingsinvloeden, of het nu om straling gaat of om een ‘giftige’ stof, maken ons in lage dosering sterker, maar schaden in hoge dosering. Een lichte stress op ons lichaam lijkt prima, maar niet constant en ook niet te intensief. Zelfs de gevreesde dioxines en PCB’s blijken in lage dosering te beschermen tegen kanker. En een belangrijke reden dat groente en fruit gezond zijn, is gelegen in de gifstoffen die ze bevatten. Fytochemicaliën, zoals curcumine, resveratrol, sulforafaan en capsaïcine zijn voor planten een bescherming tegen belagers, voor ons dragen ze – na consumptie – bij aan de gezondheid.
Hoge dosis is schadelijk, lage dosis kan positieve effecten hebben
‘Wat je niet doodt, maakt je sterker.’ Blootstelling aan een hoge dosis is schadelijk, maar blootstelling aan een lage dosis kan juist positieve effecten hebben. Dat gaat ook op voor andere ‘schadelijke’ invloeden. Neem de atoomrampen in Hiroshima en Nagasaki. Ongelukkigen direct onder de explosie waren op slag dood. Overlevenden die aan een hoge stralingsdosis werden blootgesteld, kregen ernstige gezondheidsproblemen, waaronder leukemie. Opvallend was echter dat zij die een relatief lage stralingsdosis ontvingen (omdat ze op 2 à 2,5 kilometer afstand verbleven), 30 procent minder vaak leukemie hadden dan mensen die nóg verder weg woonden!
Wat heeft dit met homeopathie te maken? Homeopathische middelen worden gemaakt door extracten van planten, mineralen of dieren krachtig te schudden en daarna soms zo sterk te verdunnen dat het uiteindelijke preparaat theoretisch geen enkel molecuul van het uitgangsmateriaal meer kan bevatten. Het proces wordt ‘potentiëring’ genoemd. Hoe kan dat nu heilzaam zijn? Indiase wetenschappers toonden aan dat homeopathische preparaten ‘nanodeeltjes’ van het uitgangsmateriaal bevatten. Deze nanodeeltjes verzamelen zich tijdens de bereiding van een preparaat aan het oppervlak. Doordat vanuit deze toplaag verder wordt verdund neemt hun gehalte minder sterk af als dat je in theorie verwacht.
‘Nanodeeltjes’ zijn 1 tot 100 nanometer in diameter en hebben andere chemische eigenschappen dan grotere delen van dezelfde stof die je met het blote oog kunt zien. Een blokje goud is geel van kleur en niet-magnetisch, maar een nanodeeltje goud is rood van kleur, smelt bij lagere temperatuur, en het is magnetisch. Nanodeeltjes hebben elektromagnetische, optische en kwantummechanische eigenschappen die door wetenschappers intensief worden bestudeerd vanwege hun toepassingsmogelijkheden op vele terreinen. Ook in de geneeskunde, en de oncologie. Groot voordeel is dat ze relatief gemakkelijk barrières in ons lichaam passeren en dus overal kunnen komen.
Homeopathische middelen, zoals calendula en arnica staan in menig medicijnkastje en zijn sinds 2002 als geneesmiddelen geregistreerd. Onderzoek met homeopathische middelen, uitgevoerd naar de hoogste standaard van de huidige medische wetenschap, levert vooral gunstige resultaten, zonder bijwerkingen, op. Onlangs werd, in reageerbuisjes, homeopathische ‘arseentrioxide’ (rattenkruid) getest op immuuncellen van muizen. In theorie kon het preparaat (‘arsenicum album 30C’) geen arsenicum meer bevatten. Onder de elektronenmicroscoop werden echter arseentrioxide nanodeeltjes aangetoond en deze bleken de immuuncellen te activeren.
Homeopathie richt zich op het sterker maken van het lichaam en de bevordering van ons zelfherstellend vermogen, en dat al sinds de 18e eeuw. Homeopathie is nanogeneeskunde ‘avant la lettre’.
